BOOM! Studios acquires Archaia Entertainment
On June 24, BOOM! Studios announced its acquisition of Archaia Entertainment, positioning BOOM! as the third largest independent company-controlled comic book and graphic novel library behind DC Entertainment and Marvel Entertainment.
“BOOM! is very committed to maintaining the brand we’ve worked so hard to build and preserving our relationship with our creators, fans, and retailers,” said Archaia Entertainment Chief Operating Officer Jack Cumming. “They’re fans of Archaia first and foremost.”
BOOM! also revealed a new business model that would share intellectual property ownership between the creators and the company.
“Our creator-friendly model ensures that creatives are rewarded financially as they generate the franchises of tomorrow,” said BOOM! CEO and founder Ross Richie. “Archaia operated with the same philosophy and objectives, which is one of the many reasons the combination is such a great fit.”
Cumming – who will continue his role after the merger – said, “Readers can expect the same editorial approach that has garnered industry-wide rewards but we will have a much stronger platform to deliver our content in all form and channels.”
Archaia Entertainment has optioned developmental deals for their properties with several entertainment studios, such as Royden Lepp’s Rust with Twentieth Century Fox, Lucid and Bolivar to Warner Bros., and Feeding Ground to Pressman Films.
The first feature film based on a BOOM! Studios property, 2 Guns starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, releases Aug. 2. BOOM! Studios has also prepared their property, Jeremiah Harm created by Keith Giffen, Alan Gran and John Muller, as a feature to be directed by Iron Sky helmer Timo Vuourensola.
